With our ever-expanding resources, MBC aims to spread awareness of and access to music by Black composers to children and adults alike!
Our Instrument Books & Online Resources include a published repertoire series that supplements current instrument training methods by featuring music exclusively by Black composers from around the world. In addition to this music, our books educate through articles and interviews. Each volume includes biographies for every composer, feature articles on Black classical music making throughout history, and profiles of Black role models in classical music, past and present. The online resources include media (audio and video examples) for each published piece to help students learn to play the music. There are also informational resources that expand on the feature articles and role models presented in the books, as well as resources for designing educational presentations about Black composers.
MBC’s Violin Volume 1 was released in October 2018. The rest of the violin series is coming soon, with other orchestral instruments to follow!
We also have created a Black Classical Composers Timeline Poster with the help of the Sphinx Organization. Our Coloring Book of Black Composers includes illustrations by artist and violinist Sho-mei Pelletier of 40 of the most important and fascinating composers who are featured in MBC’s music collections.
Other educational resources include a Living Composers Directory, a Bibliography full of diverse print resources about Black composers throughout history, and a Blog that details MBC’s on-going activities and reports stories about Black composers of yesterday and today!
If you have ideas for additional resources we could provide that would help spread greater awareness of and access to music by Black composers, please let us know! Email us at email@example.com.
