While MBC is for all music students everywhere, with its home in Chicago, MBC strives to make its materials a part of the landscape of music education throughout the city, especially in communities that could benefit from them the most. A key part of MBC’s mission is to inspire Black students to begin and continue instrumental training by showing them that they are an integral part of classical music’s past as well as its future.
Knowing that in Chicago, neighborhoods with the greatest proportion of Black residents also tend to be those with higher levels of material need, we actively work to remove barriers that prevent Chicago-based students, teachers, and music schools—especially those in Black-majority communities—from accessing MBC resources.
In this effort, MBC has been able to offer copies of our publications free of charge to qualifying music schools; curricular support to help music instructors more easily integrate MBC’s repertoire into their existing pedagogy; and provide meaningful discounts on MBC materials to qualifying Chicago-based schools, teachers, and students.
Ongoing fundraising is designed to allow MBC to provide more of our resources for free to a greater number of Chicago’s music schools, teachers, and students in need.
